Description:
The Z8 Sports Racer was built as a one-off using Volkswagen Type 3 engine transmission and front end. The car was built for Heishman VW, one of the first Volkswagen dealers in the US to run at the 1969 Daytona 24 hour. The car was driven by 3 well known FV drivers: Bill Scott, Steve Pieper and Jim McDaniel to a 18th overall finish. The car was to be used to showcase the newer Type 3 (square back, fast back) cars which they were selling. The car was purchased by its present owner Bob Houston in late 1969 and converted to be a SCCA B Sports Racer. I reacquired the car in 2012 and totally restored it. The car has gone through many hours of testing and modification, has been raced sparingly and is considered to be in race ready condition. The car currently has a 1.9 Liter Type 3 VW that is dry sump. The VW gearbox was modified in 1971 with a kit, then built by Webster to accept Hewland gears. That gearbox was lost. During the restoration, Taylor engineering duplicated this as a 5-speed.
History
In 1969, the car placed 18th overall in the Daytona 24 hour. A last minute entry into the Sebring 12 hour with a well used engine resulted in a DNF. In 1969, the car placed 13th overall in the Watkins Glen 6 hour. In the early 70's the car placed 1st overall in the 4 hour endurance race at Summit Point. In the early 70's the car placed 1st overall in the 2 hour endurance race at Summit Point. The car raced in SCCA until the late 70's when it was disassembled and forgotten. Since restoration the car has undergone extensive testing and development. It has been raced at Vintage Races sparingly at Watkins Glen and Summit Point since its restoration.Performance Data
