1986 March 86A Wildcat Mk. 1, Indy Light � �Poor man�s F5000� The 1986 March wildcat was the first of the �Indy Lights� cars. In 1986 the Series began as the �American Racing Series� or �ARS�. It was renamed in 1991 as �Indy Lights.� The series was designed to be the feeder series for CART. It originally featured identical March 86 Wildcat chassis. These were derived from the March 85B Formula 3000 chassis and were used in the series from 1986 through 1992. All were powered with Buick V6 engines which produced approximately 500 horsepower. This particular car, #201, was the Indy Lights Champion Robbie Buhl�s car. It was run by the leading Edge Racing Team of Indianapolis, one of the most successful in all of Indy Lights racing. When Buick sponsorship ended, the car was used in some club racing and track day events. When the Buick V6 gave up the ghost, the car was restored and fitted with an Edelbrock 350 SBC all forged, all roller, aluminum heads, crate engine that has been upgraded with 12 to 1 forged pistons, dual valve springs and solid roller lifters, roller rockers and stud girdles, and a Demon carburetor. The car has a four stage dry sump oil system with dual oil coolers, a Hewland 5 speed transaxle, Penske shocks and blade style sway bars. All told, the new engine has less than 500 miles on it. Since the engine was pulled to put in a new three disc Quartermaster clutch, the owner decided to do the above upgrade. The upgraded and freshened engine has two weekends of VARA vintage racing and puts out an honest 500 HP and 400+ fpt. Before going back on the track the owner put in a new fire bottle, new Hans Device compatible belts, new clutch master cylinder and a set of new Porterfield Racing brake pads. The car has also been made track and user friendly with an inboard starter, alternator and thermostatically controlled radiator fans. As you can see in the pictures, the body work consists of a pair of �shortie panels� or a larger engine cover with a F5000 type air scoop. The car comes with a considerable amount of spares, e.g., three sets of wheels and tires, 2 sets BBS and 1 set Dymag, plus a set of BBS trailer wheels, transaxle gears, front wing, rear wing, spare nose, and some misc. pieces. With decent F5000�s going for $150,000+, this car provides all of the adrenaline rush of a 500 HP small block with low maintenance and reliability. No turbo, no fuel injectors, no electronic brain and no high dollar Cosworth maintenance and parts. The only reason the owner is selling is because he�s a one-man operation with two other vintage race cars and 2 or 3 track weekends a year do not do this car justice nor give him the opportunity to become a truly competent driver who can exploit the car�s potential.
