1928 Salmson GS8 Mille Miglia Registro

Description:

This 1928 Salmson GS8, chassis and engine 21043, is a historically significant and meticulously maintained example. As one of only 114 GS8 models produced, it represents the final production Grand Sport version, derived directly from Salmson's racing "Service de Corsa" cars and utilizing their Grand Prix chassis. It is one of just 15 specimens recognized by the official Historical Register, and its continuous, documented history since new underscores its exceptional authenticity and provenance.

The car's competition readiness is a key feature, as it is fully approved by the 1000 Miglia registry, confirming its originality and correct specifications. It has been accepted to race the prestigious event in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Currently located in Italy and UK-registered, it is maintained by the owner's personal mechanic. All documentation and certifications are in order, and the 2026 Mille Miglia registry fees are already paid, ensuring immediate eligibility for application.

In terms of practicality, the Salmson offers a surprisingly accommodating pre-war driving experience. The owner, who is almost six feet tall, fits without issue. The cabin, while featuring a characteristic large steering wheel, has even accommodated a driver of 6'2" height, demonstrating that it is suitable for taller individuals.

The GS8 21043/21043 (matching numbers) was produced in Billancourt on 31/8/1928 (extract from the original factory production log).

The invoice 14810 dated 4/9/1928 certifies the sale to SMS London where the car was registered for the first time on 18/10/1928 by the Martineau family with the plate RA 6961 (still available but not registered under this plate any longer). The Martineau were known at the time for their racing Salmson cars. Later the same family became the official distributor and manufacturer of Salmson in Great Britain (BSAE LTD).

Mr. Martineau's daughter, Catherine Mary Taylor-Young (later Mrs. Mary Elliot) drove this car in the 21st edition of Goodwood VSCC in 1955.

114 GS8 were produced. It is believed that there are about 28 left in the world of which only about 9 have chassis and engine with matching numbers.

The car is approved by the 1000 Miglia registry (validation of originality and correct specs). The car was accepted to race the 1000 Miglia in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The Salmson GS8 original UK documents and the Fiva Identity Card.

21043 has been constantly maintained to be ready to manage the 1000 Miglia. Also in the last couple of years the owner has not spared expenses with a full engine, suspension, body, wheels, new tires, brakes checks and complete electric system re-wiring from scratch.

21043 was accepted to be part of the 1000 Miglia museum and was part of the exhibition in Brescia.
