Description:
Price dropped from 8500 to 6995 to 5750 UK pounds to 5500 pounds (last drop)! This item needs to go NOW to make space for and fund other projects - you will NOT find a better bargain than this, at this price it is a steal for a spring project of your own. Genuine Cosworth 170BHP (BD3 camshafts, twin 45DCOE Weber carburetors) Caterham factory top half BDR kit - approx 6,000 electronically rev limited miles (to 6,200 RPM) so in absolutely mint condition - built by Langford and Peck for a Caterham factory built HPC. I acquired this a while back to install on my fast road 1700cc crossflow 711M block, but circumstances have changed and I am now therefore selling this awesome piece of history. This kit brand new from John Wilcox Competition Engines costs well over 10,000 UK pounds, not including assembly and delivery costs - see the photograph at the link below: you are getting what is in this photograph, (everything except pistons), but obviously already assembled and ready to go. All it needs of course is a suitable block, pistons, crank, conrods etc. www.wilcoxengines.co.uk/images/bdrkit2.jpg

 - The previous owner electronically rev limited this engine to 6,200rpm and only hit the limit on a couple of occasions whilst doing an autotest. Enter the BDR: Caterham now enters the story, seeking a replacement (like Ford fifteen years earlier) for the 'Twink'. No longer produced by Lotus, a few cars were fitted with the Vegantune replacement engine but customer demand for yet more power (has anything changed?) lead them to commission Cosworth to produce yet another kit, the BDR. The kits were to be built on a standard crossflow bottom end and rods (but with DFV con-rod bolts!) and a BDA crank, usually utilising the 711M block although some were built with the stronger, but heavier, AX thick-wall competition block. The kit included Cosworth pistons, and a head developed from the BDA but with the BDT four-bolt exhaust flanges set nearer to the vertical, and with the original, tiny, BDA valves and single springs. Cam carrier together with covers, cams and pulleys completed the plot. Langford and Peck usually did the build, with the block painted in their customary shade of reddish brown. Caterham customers were offered two BDR variants - the 1600cc with BD1 cams and 40DCOE carbs, producing a claimed 150Bhp and the 1700cc 'HPC' with higher lift BD3 cams and 45DCOE carbs and making 170Bhp. Cam covers were painted gold for the 1700cc BDR and blue for the 1600cc BDR, making the variants easily recognisable once the bonnet is off. The noise is usually sufficient to distinguish a BD from any other engine once started! The 1700 BDR was rarely offered in CKD, or kit form by Caterham, who required the prospective owner attend a High Performance driving Course (with John Lyons) before taking delivery. Around three hundred and fifty 1700cc BDR kits (but only 50 of the baby 1600cc) kits were supplied by Cosworth, with many of the completed Sevens finding their way to Japan, where the BDR has an almost godlike following.
