Bill- I once got an old race car where, on one side, an odd bearing was home made by using a ball (of the right size) from a common spherical joint along with a race was made from two machined pieces of brass that sandwiched the ball. The brass pieces were held together by the housing in the A-arm and its snap ring. I'm not even sure this is a good idea, but by offsettting the center of the ball I believe you could achieve greater than original "punch out" strength in one direction along the axis of the ball bore. Good luck.
