1987 Porsche 944 Turbo Cup “SCCA Escort Series” Description: This car is #10 of 11 cars built by Porsche Motorsport for the 1987-88 SCCA/Escort Endurance Championship pro racing series. see the following for more information on the "escort" car : //forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/234752-looking-for-all-nine-1987-u-s-turbo-cup-cars.html The car was sold by Al Holbert PMNA to Uniroyal Goodrich in August 1987 and was reportedly used for tire testing, driven by local pro racer Bob Strange. After a shunt at Nelson Ledges the car was retired, until purchased by a Pittsburgh SCCA racer in 1990. In preparation for SCCA competition as an ITE class car, the car was stripped of all interior components and received a front clip; first SCCA race was in May 1992, per logbooks that come with car. Car was raced in SCCA ITE and Porsche Club Racing GT3 class until 2003 by two owners. Currently the car is used only for DE events, but could easily be returned to club racing. Car was a well known winner in the Cleveland-Pittsburgh area with 11 SCCA ITE and 3 PCA GT-3 wins claimed by prior owner. Also 5 SCCA regional championships including the Mid-Ohio Cup and the PCA Workers’ Choice Award. The Cup cars from the factory had 52 specific differences from the 1987 street version 944 Turbo. Most of these were deleted items to save weight such as delete power steering, radio, air conditioning, power windows, rear wiper, sunroof, power seats, power mirrors. Some additional items to aid performance were magnesium racing wheels, strut tower brace, fiberglass hood, larger turbo, Recaro racing seat for driver only, manual quick ratio steering, Matter cage, complete list available. The car in current state is turn-key ready for 2010 driver ed season. The car has been maintained by Steinel’s Autowerks in Twinsburg Ohio since the early 1990’s. In current configuration car has fiberglass hood, factory strut brace, lightweight mirrors, custom roll cage, Recaro pole position seats, 2.5 liter engine with lightweight crank, flywheel, Carillo rods, high performance chip, bigger turbo with adjustable boost, plastic side windows, Lexan windshield. Font suspension rebuilt in summer 2007 with refurbished double adjustable Konis. Engine freshened with pistons, rings, injectors, Tial wastegate, widefire head gasket.
