This car was the object of a complete professional ground up restoration that was completed in March 2001. It is ready to race.
History
"Featured in Bernard Cowdrey's newly revised book, "Formula Junior: The Complete A-Z," The Bandit is a unique survivor of post-war American
formula car racing history. The car was built in 1959-60 by active SCCA racer and engineer, George Barnard of Birmingham, Alabama. He based
his design on the Lotus 18 and other factory-built Formula Juniors, but fabricated and built the chassis and suspension himself.
The original drive train was a Ford 1100cc engine coupled to a Fiat 600 transaxle. He also handcrafted the aluminum and fiberglass body.
George raced the Bandit in SCCA competition at Elkhart Lake and several locations in the southeast before selling the car to Bob Winslow also
of Birmingham. Bob raced it often in the southeastern U.S. throughout the mid 1960s. Extensive documentation of the car's origins and racing history
is available. The car had been in storage for many years when the seller acquired it as a roller in January 1999 from Bill Wiswedel, a machine shop owner
and racecar collector from Holland MI. The restoration was begun at Alan Christian Motorcars of Holland, Michigan soon thereafter with the goal
of racing the Bandit in vintage competition.
