Description

This car is one of about 12 built, of which 5 are known to be remaining. It holds the Nurburgring short course 500cc record which was set in 1982. It underwent a recent restoration by Peter Denty and comes race ready.

History

The owner of this car believes it to be a 1950, whereas historical reference dates the first Arnott to have been built in 1952. The car was designed for Daphne Arnott by George Thornton using conventional chassis lines, but sporting double wishbone and longitudinal torsion bar suspension and unmistakable looks coming from its short wheelbase, side fuel tanks and wide open cockpit. Ivor Bueb changed his Arnott, using coil springs, making the wheelbase longer and replacing the pannier tanks with one behind the cockpit, but he did not stay on long and soon was driving a Cooper, which is a sure sign of poor Arnott potential. In 1953 the best outing in a grand scale half litre event was posted by John Brise a fourth in a Silverstone 100 mile race. Consequently Arnott turned to Sports Car building later that year.
