Description
The car has had a largely cosmetic go through in the last year and the engine started and run in January of 2003. All fasteners were replated and metal parts polished. The car is very well detailed. Only the control arms need a touch of scotchbrite. The wheels were resealed and the tires hold air. Note, the photos with the bodywork removed were taken before the most recent go-through and are presented to show the original condition of the car. Body-off photos since the go through are not yet available.
History
For 1983 CART banned ground effect skirts in an attempt to reduce downforce, but the revised aerodynamics of the March 83C soon proved that a lost hope. Ralph Bellamy had worked extensively in the wind tunnel and the one-piece carbon fibre underwing was promoted by March as being as significant a development as ground effects. Robin Herd had outlined lower weight, increased chassis rigidity, and more efficient aerodynamics for the new car, an incremental development of the previous March designs. The so-called "half-carbon" chassis marking the first year that carbon appeared on the March Indy cars, with the upper cockpit surround being in carbon fibre and the lower portion of the tub and floorpan remained in aluminum honeycomb. The car was designed around the new "slimline" DFX. The cars rear aero package was designed around March's own transverse gearbox, which most teams used only on the ovals, preferring the more reliable Hewland for the road courses.
