This package consists of chassis numbers 871-02 and 871-03. (Chassis number 871-01 is currently on display in Japan.) 871-02 was the test and backup car, driven by Mauricio Gugelmin (team test driver), while 871-03 was raced 5 times by Ivan Capelli during the 1987 Grand Prix season. He finished 4th in the Jim Clark Trophy for normally aspirated cars.

The cars were designed by Gordon Coppuck for March’s full return to Formula One in 1987.


Designed by Gordon Coppuck, the March 871 was March's return to Formula 1 in 1987, thanks to Leyton House. When March went into receivership in the early 1990’s the assets of the factory were sold off, or reverted to the bank. Barclay’s Bank wound up with the entire 1987 factory team, excepting chassis 871-01 which was sold to a Japanese Leyton House fan. The team included three cars (chassis 871-02, 871-03, and 87P (an interim F3000 based F1 car) and the full allotment of factory spares and support equipment. It was planned that a subsidiary of Barclay’s would use the team to found a gentleman’s formula one driving course. This was sponsored by Dial, a French company, but never got started. Instead, the entire package was sold to a French beef magnate. He sold chassis 87P to an Italian gentleman, keeping 871-02 and 871-03 for his own race shop. His mechanic drove both cars at shakedown outings while the owner never drove them. They were sold to the current owner in December of 2001.

Both cars had their Cosworth DFZ 3.5 liter motors freshened by Heini Mader for the Dial Team. Both cars have been painted in the proper turquoise Leyton House colors. 871-02 is in full and pristine Leyton House livery. 871-03 is in fresh paint with no graphics. Both cars have been down to the tub and completely rebuilt, including rebuilt fuel cells. Cars are ready for new belts, instrumentation packages to suit the drivers, tires and set-up. Engines have been converted from electronic fuel injection to Cosworth mechanical systems. Brakes have been changed to new steel disks with new pads. Will make interesting, lower cost entry into the BOSS series in HSR/SVRA.
