Description
This proper March Formula 2 car is in pristine condition after a long and detailing restoration, with no expense spared. The tub is new (the original has been retained for posterity) as are all corners, rose joints, Koni dampers, rear wing, oil tank. It has got the period correct BMW M12/7 2-litre engine and has only done one race. It would be a very serious contender and a sure winner in Formula 70, Derek Bell Trophy in the UK or Acemai Trophy in France.
History
March, with BMW power for the works team, totally dominated F2 in 1973. An only mildly updated customer car was produced for '74 but the works team caused considerable grumbling among customers by showing up with a special side rad version for their use alone. The design was abandoned for '75 with a new wider tub design which carried on less successfully into '77, when in desperation March dusted off the 742 prints and produced the 772P, based on the original March tub design dating back to '71. There is far more in common between a 78 or 79 March F2 or Atlantic car and this 1974 car that there is between the '75-'77 cars, making this a much more capable chassis than its date might suggest.
The last of 30 March F2 cars produced in 1974, this car was entered by Team Harper for David Purley in the April 1974 Deutschland Trophy at Hockenheim. It was sold to Belgian racer Bernard De Dryver at the end of 1974 and was raced as an interim car by fellow Belgian Claude Bourgoignie in the 1975 Pergusa race. It later passed in the hands of hill climb racers before being bought by the present owner who restored it to its current mint and close to perfect condition, certainly one of the best we have seen in recent years.
