Description

Well known car in the Formula Junior circle, this particular example is the frst of the two Formula Junior cars ever built by Arthur Mallock. and is one of the most famous Mallocks ever built and still surviving. In race ready condition, this car is a very competitive and different proposal for Formula Junior addicts. U2 could drive it !

History

Major Arthur Mallock built two Formula Junior cars in 1960. Chassis n° 1 was raced by Arthur Mallock himself and chassis n° 2 went to John Harwood. The U2 achieved surprisingly good results for such a low budget car. John Harwood managed to win at the Nürburgring in 1960 and A. Mallock also raced his car successfully beating Lotus 18s at Silverstone and finishing second at Brands Hatch the same year. A total of 10 Mk2s were built, but only two FJs, the others being 1,172 Formula Clubman cars and sports racing cars. Five cars are known to still exist. This particular chassis (n°1) is considered as the first production Mallock. Arthur Mallock modified the car for racing in 1962 and finally sold it in 1964 to Dave Morris who hillclimbed it for four years using a 1,600 cc Twin Cam engine. Pete Matthews then hillclimbed it for another four years before Paul Errington bought it in 1972 and raced it in Formula 1200 between 1974 and 1976 and then hillclinbed it before Mike Harrison bought it in 1979. Restored and converted back to proper Formula Junior specification, Harrison invited Ray Mallock to drive the car at Silverstone in the spring of 1980.

Recent Competition History

Ray Mallock dominated a round of the Varley Batteries Formula Junior Championship in 1980 before the car driven extensively in the eighties by Mike Harrison who became European Formula Junior Champion with it for two years. Driven successfully by James Denty and the current owner during the last three years.
