Having achieving his best results in F1 in the car, Elio asked to purchase the car in running order from the team. The team readily obliged but Renault had, and still has, a policy of absolute secrecy and normally does not release F1 race engines. Apparently Elio's father was able to exert some influence through his business concerns and Renault reluctantly agreed to release one of the race engines actually used in the car. At the last minute they removed the engine management unit, rendering it unrunnable. Elio was displeased with this but by this time had signed with Brabham and eventually arranged for A Bosch motronic unit similar to those used on the Brabham TAG engines to be fitted to the car. After Elio's tragic death testing a Brabham the car was sold by his estate.
