History
1964 saw the development of a new Formula 2 for 1 litre cars. Chapman personally supervised the
development of a new car, based on the Formula Junior Type 27 tub, but paneled in 16 guage steel. The front
suspension was that of the type 24/25 F1 cars, while the rear suspension was a completely new design,
featuring top radius arms located much higher than in previous designs. Both front and rear suspensions
were completely adjustable.
The power unit was the brand new Cosworth SCA featuring the first of many Cosworth purpose-designed aluminum
cylinder heads mated to a series production block, in this case the Ford Anglia. The engine was canted
over 25 degrees in the chassis.
The Formula 2 effort was run by Ron Harris and entered as Ron Harris-Team Lotus. The team competed
in the important new French national series as well as the British national series. The team eventually
ran four cars with a total of 7 drivers juggling committments with a variety of series including Formula
1. Driver strength began with Clark, Peter Arundell, Mike Spence, and Peter Proctor, later joined by
Jackie Stewart, John Fenning, and Brian Hart. Harris was dogged all year by organizational and logistics problems, with the team often split due to
schedule conflicts.
Clark won overall at Pau, the Nurburgring, Mallory Park, and Brands Hatch. Lotus wins in the
French series totalled 7 to Brabham's 8 and he won the French Championship, while Mike Spence won the
British.
