SOLD SOLD SOLD This is a unique Elan, a truly turnkey racecar, recently prepped for the track.It is built to 26R Standards and a proven winner. The fresh all steel dry sump 1600cc Twin Cam has dyno time only, completely rebuilt by Kiwi Engineering CT in August 2007. 200 HP and 150 lbs torque. The gearbox is newly rebuilt, June 2007, never raced.
History
History This car was exported from Lotus Engineering to South Africa in 1970 and has been a race car ever since according to Ian Hebblethwaite, the Historic Racing Car and Lotus registrar there. It is one of the few Elans with the chassis number stamped on the chassis. Lotus Engineering provided documentation of the build date in 2007. It was last owned and raced in South Africa by Nick Webber who exported it in 1996. It was sold it to David Hinton, Technical director of HSR in 1998. David rebuilt it from the ground up to 26R mechanical specs and documented the rebuild photographically.It has 26R body flares but does not have the 26R lightweight body) All the fundamentals like gusseting, suspension and stub axles were meticulously done to factory race specs. He raced it in 1999 and the sold it to veteran driver, Joel Weinberger. He is the son of John, who was elected to membership of the USRRC in 2007. Joel an automotive dealer, further developed the car to a perfectly neutral set up. Joel says the car handled better than his 26R and was always quicker He won many races with the VSCDA, USRR Masters and SVRA. He participated in some of the classic battles between Nick Hamm’s lightning quick 26R at the BRIC at Road America each year where the car still holds the overall Group 8 lap record, under 2:34. He replaced the engine in 2002. I bought the car from Joel in 2003 and GMT Racing further developed the car which continued it’s podium finishes in SVRA and VARAC including 3rd place in the SVRA Enduro Championship Series in 2004. (see Racing Highlights-timing sheets available for all races) I replaced the engine in 2007 which has dyno time only and installed a new dogbox which has no race time.(An optional extra, the list price includes a rebuilt Ford gearbox) Since the ground up rebuild in 1998, the car has raced incident free and the chassis has never been bent.
