DescriptionThis original Derrick Bennet Atlantic, Ex-Fred Opert car is available as a roller and mostly intact. The car wore many hats in period including Labatt's Blue livery, Excita Prophylactics bright pink livery, and once was driven by Bobby Rahal with a Marlboro painted nose. The car has New Zealand tech stickers dated '77-'78. The slae includes the roller and extra body panels including bright pink Excita nose painted over with Marlboro logo. The car ran in the Formula Atlantic Series in the US and Canada. Car was prepared for James Hunt to run at the Mexico City Race in 1977. The bright pink Excita Prophylactic nose was painted over with Marlboro because Marlboro was James Hunt's sponsor at the time. Bernie Ecclestone refused to let James Hunt run the car at the Mexico race, as Hunt was the reigning Formula One Champion at the time, and the Mexico City race didn't have the proper FIA sanctions. Fred Opert flew Bobby Rahal in to drive at Mexico City. Rahal was twenty two seconds in the lead when the battery broke and Rahal was a DNF. James Hunt practiced in the car at Mexico City.
This B39 was shipped to New Zealand and ran in the Tasman Series with drivers Keke Rosberg and Bobby Rahal. The New Zealand tech stickers are still on rear bulkhead above seat. The car is without engine but otherwise complete and in exceptionally good shape. There are extra body panels: blue engine cover with Ford emblem, Labatt Blue side panel, extra nose. You can see the bright pink Excita color under the James Hunt Marlboro sponsor paint.
