Description
This relatively rare Chevron F2 car was driven competitively by David Purley for John Harper in the European F2 season. Now fitted with a unburstable Cosworth YBM in place of the unobtainable BMW it is ready for Formula 70 Group I events. The car has been completely restored and is nicely fitted out and presented.
History
The 1974 F2 season saw wealthy Hong Kong businessman John Harper order March 742/BMWs for his drivers David Purley and an out-of-retirement Dieter Questor. When the works Marches appeared with a specification totally different than the customer cars and were clearly superior Harper switched to Chevrons in retaliation and scored some good results. This car is the David Purley car and took a 2nd at Pau and Rouen against the supposedly unbeatable works Marches of Stuck and Depailler. The B27 Chevron was produced in the relatively small number of 16 cars, including both F2 and the more numerous Atlantic variant. Much of this is due to the March juggernaut being in full tilt after their domination of the 1973 championship. In fact, despite far fewer numbers the B27s proved to be able to match the pace of the Marches. Though no longer running a full effort Fred Opert ran Bertil Roos in a few early F2 races. He qualifying 3rd at Barcelona. Tom Pryce put the Team Baty B27 on pole at the Salzburgring but was defeated by a fuel pump. Purley took a well-deserved second there as well. Pryce also scored a 3rd at Mugello. The three competitive B27s proved a consistent threat to the more than 20 Marches competing that year.
This car was later imported to the US and run as an Atlantic. It was purchased from dealer David Saul as a roller and restored to it's current condition.
