Description

One of two Mk8 cars built, this one being the Mak Kronn car. Came third in very first Formula A race at Continental Divide raceway in May 1968. Upgraded with the first of the Mk12 bodies after an accident at Road America in July 1968. As McKee Engineering was sponsored by Armco Metals, the car features a number of high strength exotic steels in its construction (refer Bob McKee paper for society of Automotive Engineers January 1970). The car also features on the cover of the “Formula A 5000 The A to Z” book by Bernard Cowdrey and is well recognised within the McKee owners Group. The car also featured from new 4 wheel Kelsey Hayes ventilated disks with 4 spot callipers, unlike some of its competitors in period. The car remained in the estate of the Schlitz Brewing Company after the death of Ike Uihlein (president) and his son late in 1968 and had very little use until a restoration in 1989 and race preparation in 2010 through to 2015. The car has a three meeting old all new race engine producing well over 500hp, and the LG600 gearbox has very little use and handles the torque of the engine easily. The original Mk8 uprights that come with the car have recently been upgraded to new Mk12 uprights for safety purposes. The dry sump oiling system has also been upgraded to handle the increased forces the car generates with modern slicks (original tank/cooler comes with car). The car is extremely well engineered and is both strong and light and comes with a copy of the original engineering drawings and parts specifications. The car has an Australian COD and logbook. A piece of history, that is fast and easy to drive and ready to use with some simple pre race preparation.
