Description
Beautiful example of a unique and special car. One of 10 rear engine Huffaker Mk II’s built. Exceptionally clean and well maintained. Professionally maintained 1995 to present. Restored 1998. Ownership traced back to early 1960’s. Raced Dec 2007, well sorted, handles and drives exceptionally well. Also available is a full race prepared BMC 948c (bored .040 over or about 980cc) engine with adaptor. I will also consider removing Ford engine and selling car as a roller.
History
Built by Joe Huffaker as a kit car in 1962 by BMCD of San Francisco. Only 10 of the Mark II Formula Juniors were built and this one of the last ones. Joe Huffaker continually modified and improved his Mark II as the competition from Lotus, Cooper etc. increased. Records of when and what modifications were made to the Mark II chassis are sketchy. All indications lead to the conclusion that this car was built by Joe Huffaker with disk brakes both front and rear. The original axle bearing carriers in the original transmission are cast and designed to hold disk brake calipers just as Joe Huffaker did with his modifications. Ownership can be traced back to the 1960’s; exact ownership dates and race results are incomplete. But from all indications the car was not extensively raced. There is no indication of any frame damage repair or suspension damage repair. From the records I do have, the car finished in the lead group, either 1st or 2nd overall or in class, when raced in the 1960’s and 1970’s. No history of the car is available between the mid to late 1970 through the late 1980’s. In the late 1980’s Burton Benjamin of the Chicago area purchased the car and did a 3-year restoration, finishing in 1991. In 1995 Jeff Mennen of the Mennen Products purchased the car and raced it between 1995 and 2002. The car was professionally maintained by Jack Woehrle of the Cooper Car Company (1995 – 2001) and then by Geoffery Heller (2001 – 2006) of Driving Machines of Plain City Ohio. A new transmission as installed in 1995 and a Ford engine installed in 1998. Car was stripped to the frame and restored in the 1998 time period. In 2001/02 the suspension was magnafluxed. Car was raced three to four times a year between 1995 and 2002. Tracks raced at includes: Roebling Road, Pocono, Watkins Glen, Summit Point, Homestead, Lime Rock, and Mid Ohio. The last race by GJ Mennen was in 2002 where he drove it to a first place finish. The car was not raced between 2002 and 2007.
Recent Competition History
Raced at Eagle’s Canyon (north of Dallas Tx) with CVAR in December, 2007. Finished 2nd overall, six seconds behind Lotus 18 who won with best time of 2:12.2, and 49 seconds ahead of third place Lotus 18 with a best time of 2:19.2. Car is faster than the driver.
